The Treasure Valley is Getting Smashed!
Smashburger, an innovative “better burger” restaurant concept, will open its first Idaho location on Aug. 19 at at 3223 East Louise Drive in Meridian, it’s the first of five planned restaurants in the state. And, Lucky Us! We’ve been asked to help launch the new restaurant in our local area – our job is to assist with media relations and help create a “buzz.”

Known among burger lovers for the cooking method used to create the perfect burger, Smashburgers are either a one-third or half-pound ball of one hundred percent Angus beef – fresh, never frozen – smashed on a flat grill to sear in juicy flavor. To further the “better burger” experience, Smashburgers are served on butter-toasted buns and topped with a selection of real cheeses, the freshest produce and unique toppings, including haystack onions, guacamole or even a fried egg.

Smashburgers can be paired with sides like veggie frites and rosemary and garlic-seasoned Smashfries. Diners can also enjoy Häagen-Dazs shakes and root beer floats with their meal. There also are Smashdogs, Smashchicken and Smashsalads. A regional menu created specifically for Idaho will be available at statewide stores. It includes:

In honor of the Idaho men and women who have died in service to our country, the Idaho Veterans Cemetery will hold a Memorial Day celebration on Monday, May 25 beginning at 10 a.m. The cemetery is located at 10100 N. Horseshoe Bend Road.

The ceremony will feature several speakers including a representative from Sen. Mike Crapo’s office; Congressman Walt Minnick; Major General Larry LaFrenz, Commanding General of the Idaho National Guard; Col. James McGovern, Commander of the 366th Operations Group at Mt. Home AFB; and Col. USMC Retired David Brassuel, Administrator of the Idaho Division of Veterans Services.

There also will be music from the the Idaho National Guard 25th Army Band, a wreath laying ceremony, rifle and cannon salute, a military flyover and a ceremonial release of white doves.

Because of limited parking inside the cemetery grounds, attendees are asked to park their vehicles at the Optimist Youth Sports Complex, 9889 Hill Rd., and take a free shuttle to and from the cemetery. The shuttle includes handicap accessibility and is being provided by the Brown Bus Company of Nampa.

Professional organizers with the Senior Moves program are trained to help people sort and categorize items, and decide what to what to keep and what to let go of. Idaho’s veterans have given much to our state and our country, and sometimes they need a little help too. This year there is a new spot on the Idaho State tax form where you can choose to donate money to the Idaho Division of Veterans Services. Why should we consider donating to Idaho Veterans Services? Well, they are the ones who help our veterans receive the benefits that they’re entitled to when they return from serving our country. They oversee the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery and ensure that our veterans receive proper burials. They  operate three Veterans homes around the state where they care for elderly, disabled and sick veterans, and provide them with healthy activities for their minds, bodies and spirits. When you choose to donate to the Idaho State Veterans Services, your gift will help support these programs around the state. So, this year consider giving a little back to Idaho’s heroes.
