The New York Times contracted with Patti Murphy to provide local reporting on Senator Larry Craig’s resignation and press conferences after he was arrested in a Minnesota men’s room.
When Idaho Senator Larry Craig called a press conference in Aug. 2007 to discuss the news of his arrest in a Minneapolis airport restroom, the New York Times needed someone local, on the ground to cover the breaking news, NOW. When NYT national assignment editor Joan Nassiveria called me to see if could report on the press conference scheduled in less than 30 minutes, of course I said, “of course.” Over the next several weeks, I worked with Times writer William Yardley on getting local reaction, covering a second press conference and other follow up stories.
